Explore The Concept Of Safety Through The Image Of A Protector
This journaling exercise invites you to explore the concept of safety through the image of a protector.
A protector doesn’t have to be real, human, or even from this world. Sometimes it’s an animal, a symbol, a color, or a memory that gives us a felt sense of “I’m okay.”
Step 1: Imagine Your Protector
Who or what makes you feel safe, seen, or stronger when things are hard?
It could be:
A real person from your life (past or present)
A fictional figure or mythological being
A part of yourself (maybe your future self)
An animal, element, or spirit
A completely invented guardian
Let yourself sketch, paint, or collage an image of this protector. What do they look like? What colors or shapes are around them? What do they carry or wear?
Step 2: Build the Space Around Them
Where does this protector live or show up?
Is it a forest clearing? A glowing doorway? A quiet room? The air beside you?
Add imagery or texture to show the environment where you feel most supported or watched over.
Step 3: Add Words or a Message
If your protector could speak, what would they say to you right now?
Write it down—whether it’s one sentence or a list of phrases.
What do you need to hear? What truth or encouragement would feel grounding?
Step 4: Reflect on Your Connection
Spend a moment with your page and ask:
How do I know when I need protection?
What are the signs in my body or behavior?
How can I call on this figure or part of myself when I feel unsafe or overwhelmed?
This prompt can remind you that you’re not alone—even if that strength comes from within or imagination. Sometimes our inner world can offer what the outer world withholds.
