Following the Threads of Past and Future
This art journaling prompt is about exploring where you’ve come from and where you’re headed—the pull of your past and the possibilities of your future. You don’t need to know the answers or draw a straight line. Just notice what comes up as you give it form.
Step 1: Draw Two Anchors
On the left side of your page, make a shape or symbol that represents your past. On the right side, make a shape or symbol for your future.
The past might be a stone, a doorway, or a winding root.
The future might be a horizon, a light, or an open hand.
Choose whatever comes naturally.
Step 2: Fill the Anchors
Use color, texture, and imagery to bring each anchor to life. Let the left side hold what you’ve carried with you—memories, lessons, challenges, or gifts. Let the right side hold your hopes, dreams, fears, or curiosity about what lies ahead.
Step 3: Weave the Threads
Now, look at the space in between. Draw lines, threads, or pathways that connect the past and the future. They might be tangled, frayed, or smooth. They might cross over each other or move in one direction. Trust your hand.
This middle space is the present—where you stand, holding both what has shaped you and what is still unfolding.
Sit with your page and notice: How does it feel to see your past, present, and future sharing the same space?
